My fish is gasping at the surface — what should I do right now?
Before anything else: stop feeding, and if you have a test kit, check ammonia. Gasping usually means the water, not the fish — low oxygen or ammonia burn — and adding medication to that water makes it worse. Then call. Describing what you see plus a fresh ammonia reading is enough to know whether this is an emergency water change situation or a disease visit.
How do I know if it’s disease or just bad water?
