How It Works
Compose the layout
Every scape starts as a composition: where the eye should land, where the negative space lives, how the layout reads from the couch versus up close. The room the tank sits in is part of the design.
Hardscape, then plant
Structure goes in first — wood and stone set the bones — then plants are layered around it by height, texture, and growth habit. Species are chosen for your actual light and livestock, not for how they photograph in someone else’s tank.
Grow in and refine
An aquascape is planted as a starting point, not a finished state. You get guidance for the grow-in weeks — trimming, dosing if needed, what filling-in looks like — and the layout can be refined once the plants declare themselves.

Aquascaping Questions
Can you aquascape a tank that already has fish in it?
Yes — rescapes of running tanks are routine. The work is staged so the tank’s biology isn’t wrecked in an afternoon: the established filter stays untouched, water is preserved where possible, and the fish are protected while the hardscape and planting happen. The tank looks brand new; its beneficial bacteria never know anything happened.
Live plants or artificial — which should I choose?
Both can look excellent, and the honest answer depends on your light, your fish, and your appetite for upkeep. Live plants actively improve water quality and grow into a scape, but they ask for the right lighting and occasional trimming. Some fish (large cichlids especially) treat live plants as salad — in those tanks, high-quality artificial plants arranged well are the smarter play.
Will my aquascape still look good months from now?
That’s the design goal — it’s why maintenance access is part of every layout. Scapes are built so glass can be cleaned, debris doesn’t collect in dead spots, and plant growth fills in rather than swallowing the composition. Pairing a new scape with a maintenance schedule keeps it closest to day-one form.
What’s the difference between aquascaping and a custom aquarium build?
Aquascaping is the art inside the glass — layout, hardscape, and planting, often in a tank you already own. A custom build is the whole project: the tank, stand, and equipment designed from scratch, with the aquascape as one part.
